Mr. President!

I am turning to you in order to draw your attention to the intolerable situation of those Hungarians who live as second class citizens in Hungary's neighbouring countries as a result of the dismemberment of Hungary after World Wars I. and II.

Those, who on their own ancestral land became subjects of foreign states, suffered extermination, torture, persecution, deportation, imprisonment, confiscation of property and other atrocities and humiliations. Today they are still fighting for those rights which are guaranteed in most democratic countries, such as education in the mother tongue, access to all professions, equality before the law, equal economic opportunities and the right to preserve national heritage, national culture and national language. Particular attention should be devoted to Székelyland (today Romania) and the Vajdaság/Voivodina (today Serbia), where the authorities try to destroy Hungarian communities by artificially modifying the ethnic composition of Hungarian cities and villages. In Slovakia, the borders of Hungarian counties were redrawn in order to deprive them from their right of local self-government.

Having tried to improve their situation through various means, the Hungarians living on the detached territories arrived at the conclusion that only the obtention of territorial autonomies could preserve durably the stability of the region. Coming Sunday, June 18 2006, several thousand Székely (a particular group of Hungarians) will gather in Székelyland to adopt the statutes of their future autonomous region.

Hungarians are both peaceful and freedom loving people. They have, for a long time demanded in a peaceful manner that their situation be reexamined. Unfortunately the powerful of this world do not tend to listen to peaceful demands. Mr. President, we believe that another center of instability in our region would not serve the interest of anybody, including the United States. We therefore kindly ask you to use your political weight in ensuring that the areas inhabited by a Hungarian majority are granted territorial autonomy in Székelyland (Transsylvania) and Vajdaság (today part of Serbia), as they also rightfully call for it, in order to avoid unrest and violence.
